Bureaucracy aside, Gifford says that working on a government project—particularly one with an extended timetable—does have its benefits. “The importance of Pratt & Whitney’s role in the jet fighter program means that this project is really well funded. That has let us do it correctly from the start,” he says. “We can also make the product more sophisticated over time. We can spend time perfecting gestures, for example, so that the human-computer interface will have a much higher fidelity for the long run.” Gifford expects that most of the simulation’s features will be finalized by 2004. The extended schedule, he adds, lets his company take on other projects, such as a recently contracted simulation of the International Space Station for NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.
